Trend Report

The first trend featured is the colour red. This trend has appeared in the Autumn/Winter 2010 collection as well as Spring/Summer 2011, due to its popularity and versatility. The inspiration for this trend comes from the ever present influence of the economic situation, in regards to the fashion industry. Optimism through colour seems to be the primary focus, as stated by Pantone, in an attempt to counteract the usage of dreary neutrals and 'safe' colours that have shown up on the runway in recent seasons.

The S/S 2011 aspect of this trend however, draws its inspiration from the Far East, with a more oriental look prevailing (as shown in a recent edition of Vogue), crimsons being combined with metallic foils in gold.

As shown above, this is a trend that has made its way from the catwalk and into the wardrobes of those of us who can't quite afford designer clothes. Charli is pictured wearing a red scoop neck tee with ruffled cap sleeves with black jeans and a black military jacket with puffed sleeves. Red paired with black (or even pink) was a very prominent element of this trend on the runway.

The second trend I identified on the street is military-style jackets. First appearing in pop culture in the 1960's, the military jacket has been a significant wardrobe staple ever since. Featured in the 2010 A/W collection, this trend comes from a vintage inspiration and the idea of 'modernised nostalgia', as mentioned by WGSN, where an old idea is taken and renewed or reworked to fit the current aesthetic.

Sharleen is pictured wearing an olive drab military-style jacket over a black singlet and ripped black jeans (the outfit also consisted of military boots). On the runway, this trend was worn over a dress or paired with black pants for a more androgynous look.

The third and final trend is knit. Knit was a very popular look for A/W 2010, ranging from knitted sweaters to dresses. This trend's inspiration draws on the 'handmade look' where garments appear to be more personal. As a result of the current economic condition, APLF states that consumers have become more practical and sensible when purchasing garments and the heritage aspect of this trend definitely reflects this.

In this image, Tayla is shown wearing a cable-knit hooded sweater pinned with a brooch over an aubergine scoop-neck dress with a black beaded bow cinch belt and black heeled slouch boot. Knitted sweaters were seen on the runway paired with a business coat and long pants for a masculine look or worn over the top of a dress for a more casual, yet feminine, look.
